Hi Terry, Scott -

I hope this letter finds you both well. It was a pleasure talking in your seminar last fall and catching up. You're both continuing to do such interesting work. I am because I would like to know if once again you might have any students interested in interning with my at my studio in San Francisco this year.

The key skills I'm looking for are:

  • Computer Graphics programming - 2D, 3D, simulation, OpenGL
  • Computer vision programming - especially person tracking and high-quality figure extraction. Using OpenCV and other lower level libraries.
  • Software engineering - ability to integrate into a large, relatively well engineered vision/graphics system. Improving and extending it.
I'm also willing to teach a talented person graphics or vision if their skill is only in one area. I had great success with my intern last year who was primarily computer graphics and learned all the computer vision here.

It's also a great if they have skills and interest in the following areas

  • Performing art installations on-site
  • Mechanical engineering and design for electromechanical sculpture
  • Optics - rear and front projection, infrared lighting, filters
  • Wood fabrication
  • Metal fabrication
  • Video shooting, lighting
  • Web design
  • Good drawing skills
  • Server-side programming
  • Java programming
  • Flash programming
  • Motors, sensors and general electronic engineering and design
  • Organizational and writing skills
I've had interns in the past and usually students can get credit as a work/study. I'm happy to offer some "trade" in educating about optics, computer vision, graphics programming, java programming, etc. and of course credit on any projects they make a contribution too. The work I'm doing is quite technically sophisticated and also offers an opportunity to make a contribution to a public project that students can include in their portfolios or research program. You can direct students to my web site for examples of past work at www.snibbe.com. The internship will take place during the summer and has a small stipend to offset living expenses here in San Francisco. I also arrange for tours of the local Computer Graphics companies for my interns and assistants. Last year we visited PDI and Pixar where I have colleagues working. Please have them send me a letter of interest, resume and sample work. I will request interviews and recommendation letters from the top candidates.
